Ogle-Lee Retired Teachers' Association Meeting – October 8, 2019
The fall luncheon membership meeting of the Ogle-Lee Retired Teachers' Association was held on Tuesday, October 8, 2019 beginning with a social hour at 11:00 AM, business meeting at Noon, lunch at 12:30 PM, and the program at 1:15 PM at the Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Center near Oregon, IL. Valet parking was offered. Co-Vice Presidents Diane Kenney and Carole Sutton provided leaf-shaped ginger and molasses cookies with cream cheese spread. Marvel Blomberg and Jean Whipple coordinated luncheon reservations, Linda Kenney collected the $15 luncheon fees, Jean Whipple accepted membership dues, and Elke Grennan distributed name tags. Jean Whipple took photographs for the website. Fifty-one members and guests attended.
Co-Presidents Becky Cheek and Michele Glen conducted the business meeting and Co-Vice President Diane Kenney introduced the program speakers. Becky Cheek led the Pledge of Allegiance and Michele Glen gave the Invocation before the meal was served. A plated luncheon of roast beef, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, tossed salad, dinner rolls, apple crisp, ice tea, hot tea, coffee, and water was served.
Donation baskets for the IRTA Political Action Committee and Legal Defense Fund were on the Registration Table. Attendees donated $42 to IRTA-PAC and $97 to the Legal Defense Fund at the meeting. Forms for the IRTAPAC $1 monthly deduction from TRS pension checks were available.
The minutes from the July 9, 2019 Membership Meeting and the September 10, 2019 Board Meeting were accepted by consensus as printed.
The treasurer's report as of October 1, 2019 was accepted by consensus as prepared by Treasurer Linda Kenney. The checking account balance was $8,414.59, the Memorial Account balance was $305.81, and the Life Account balance was $7,794.67. Total assets were $16,515.07.
Membership Chairperson Jean Whipple welcomed new Ogle-Lee RTA members Lori Gipper and Ann Wilhelm.
Legislative Chairperson Kim McKenna referred members to her report in the newsletter.
The IRTA State Convention will be at the Springfield Crown Plaza on October 14-15, 2019. No Ogle-Lee RTA Board Members are attending. More information and reservation forms are on the IRTA website. Instead of donating a Silent Auction Basket as announced, Ogle-Lee RTA will instead donate $100 to the Political Action Fund (per 10/10/10 M. Glen Board consensus e-mail).
Gene Chaplin accepted the appointed position of Ogle-Lee RTA Historian. The positions of Legislative Representative, Call Coordinator, and Webmaster still need to be appointed and volunteers were requested to contact the Co-Presidents.
Co-President Becky Cheek reported on an informal meeting to discuss ideas for improving member participation in Ogle-Lee RTA with Region 1 Director Linda Nott. Carol Sutton, Diane Kenney, and Elke Grennan also attended the October 4, 2019 meeting. Suggestions discussed included a member survey, improving our local website and social media presence, streamlining membership meetings, encouraging members to be involved by doing smaller duties, and concentrating on core goals. Becky announced that a member survey will be prepared at the November Board Meeting and mailed to members. Future planning for Ogle-Lee RTA structure, goals, and meetings will be determined based on survey results and IRTA suggestions.
Jean Whipple nominated and Diane Kenney seconded for Ogle-Lee RTA Treasurer Linda Kenney and for Secretary Elke Grennan. Both agreed and were elected to their respective office. Jean Whipple nominated and Christy Roberts seconded the nomination of Carol Sutton for Co-Vice President. Carol accepted and was elected. Nominations for president (or co-presidents) and one co-vice president) will be accepted for the next meeting (TBA).
Becky Cheek thanked Diane Kenney and Carol Sutton for representing Ogle-Lee RTA and ITRA at the October 1, 2019 TRS Meeting for prospective retirees at Reagan Middle School in Dixon. Information and candy bars were distributed.
Co- Vice President Diane Kenney thanked the staff and volunteers of LOMC for the lovely table decorations, excellent meal and valet parking service.
Diane Kenney read an introduction prepared by Richard Longfellow thanking former State Senator Tim Bivens for his service and commitment to protecting the Illinois Constitution, balancing the state budget, protecting teacher pensions/TRS insurance, and respecting persons whose views may differ from yours.
The program featured "The History of Laura Ingalls Wilder" presented by Bea Chaplin and also featured a display of memorabilia.
Co-Vice President Diane Kenney spoke of the importance of keeping the Ogle-Lee Unit of IRTA strong as IRTA is the only organization solely devoted to protecting Illinois teacher pensions and TRIP/TRAIL insurance.
Remaining 2019 Ogle-Lee Board Meetings will be held at the Flagg-Rochelle Public Library beginning at 10:15 AM on Tuesday November 12, 2019. Future Membership Meetings will be announced.
