Ogle-Lee Retired Teachers' Association Meeting – April 9, 2019
The spring luncheon membership meeting of the Ogle-Lee Retired Teachers' Association was held on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 beginning with a social hour at 11:00 AM, business meeting at Noon, lunch at 12:40 PM, and the program at 1:20 PM at the First Presbyterian Church in Rochelle. Co-Vice Presidents Diane Kenney and Carole Sutton provided table decorations and Easter treats. Marvel Blomberg coordinated luncheon reservations, Linda Kenney collected the $15 luncheon fees, and Elke Grennan distributed name tags. Fifty-six members and guests attended.
Co- Presidents Becky Cheek and Michele Glen conducted the business meeting and Co-Vice President Diane Kenney introduced the program presenters. Region 1 Representative Linda Nott, IRTA Representative Loryann Eis,TRS Trustee Candidate Doug Strand,and TRS Outreach Coordinator Sandie Benhart were in attendance. Becky Cheek led the Pledge of Allegiance and Christy Roberts gave the Invocation before the meal was served. A buffet luncheon of pulled pork on buns, potato chips, seven-layer salad, fruit salad, mini cherry cheesecakes, lemonade, ice tea, and coffee was catered by Ralphie and Lulus.
Donation baskets for the IRTA Political Action Committee and Legal Defense Fund were on the Registration Table. Attendees donated $30 to IRTA-PAC and $194 to the Legal Defense Fund at the meeting. Members were encouraged to sign up for the IRTAPAC $1 monthly deduction from their pension checks.
The minutes from the October 2, 2018 Membership Meeting and the Board Meetings of November 13, 2018 and March 12, 2019 were accepted by consensus as printed.
The treasurer's report as of April 1, 2019 was accepted by consensus as prepared by Treasurer Linda Kenney. The checking account balance was $8,075.59, the Memorial Account balance was $260.81, and the Life Account balance was $7,689.73. Total assets were $16,026.13.
Membership Chairperson Jean Whipple requested members encourage recent and not-so recent retirees to join IRTA and Ogle-Lee RTA.
Region1 Representative Linda Nott spoke and provided a handout of 2019 IRTA news including the IRTA Area 1 Leadership Training Conference at LaSalle Peru on June 18, 2019 and repeated in Rock Island on June 19, 2019, the IRTA State Convention in Springfield on October 14-15, 2019, TRS Board statement on responsible pension funding, and glossary of acronyms associated with IRTA.
Co -President Becky Cheek apologized for error in last newsletter and explained why there will be no Ogle-Lee Scholarship this year.
Diane Kenney introduced IRTA member Loryann Eis who explained how TRS Trustee Candidate Doug Strand received IRTA's endorsement. Doug Strand explained why he was seeking the position and highlighted his experiences that qualify him for this position. Voting can be done on the TRS website or by calling TRS to request a paper ballot.
There was no old business.
Nominations for Ogle-Lee RTA officers will be taken at the July 9, 2019 membership meeting and voting will take place at the October 8, 2019 membership meeting. The current co-presidents have announced they will not seek re-election. There are also openings for legislative chairperson, historian, and webmaster and/or assistant webmaster.
The IRTA State Convention will be at the Springfield Crown Plaza on October 14-15, 2019.
Members were encouraged to submit suggestions especially about meeting ideas/concerns to the suggestion box located on the check-in table. There were no comments from the floor.
Loretta Bell, Necrology, memorialized the following members who passed way in 2018: Luella Cooley, Esther Wilson, Michael McNett, Nellie Mae Tieken, Carolyn Curl-Johnson, Mark Cameron, Robert Kufalk, Regina (Jean) Morrissey, Nancy Kubat, Sheldon Williams, Esther Frey, and Byford Kyler. Ogle-Lee RTA made a donation in honor of each 2018 deceased member to the IRTA Foundation. Diane Kenney thanked Loretta Bell for her informative and inspiring memorial for deceased members.
TRS Outreach Coordinator Sandie Benhart presented a program on the Pension Environment including handouts highlighting TRS demographics, legislative activities, financial updates, future of TRS pensions including relevant court cases, TRIP insurance, and TRS contact information.
Diane Kenney announced that members could take home table decorations for a $1 donation to either IRTA-PAC or Legal Defense Fund but Doug Strand donated the $10.
Remaining 2019 Luncheon Membership Meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, July 9, 2019 and Tuesday October 8, 2019.
Remaining 2019 Ogle-Lee Board Meetings will be held at the Flagg-Rochelle Public Library beginning at 10:15 AM on Tuesdays June 11, September 10, and November 12.
